Exploring the relationship between poetry and experimental electronic music, breaking the barrier between audience and artists, encouraging collaboration online and offline.

This was the first solo event organized by Naviar. In the morning we hosted an introductory workshop to haiku, a traditional short form of Japanese poetry. The poems created were then used as creative prompt by Naviar’s international online community of musicians: the resulting compositions were performed as sound installation in the evening. The event ended with live music performances by members and friends of Naviar.

haiku workshop

In the morning learned more about the history of haiku, the rules for writing one and its structure, how to add a kigo (seasonal reference) and Kireji (cutting word). We read and analyzed some of the most famous haiku and haibun. By the end of the workshop, participants had time to write their own haiku.

Incumbent night
Solitary shadow
Seeks the sun

Incumbent night!
Running away at day’s break
Another life begins

An ancient stillness
High stone arches standing firm
The old clock marks time

By the shanty church
Tombstones hum their winter lullabies
Of the long sleep

Falling leaves
On the crumbling church
A silence of old

Names on cold stones
Do this in remembrance of us
Accordion music around

DJ set/sound installation

The online community of Naviar Records made music inspired by the haiku written during the morning workshop. The songs were played in the evening as a DJ set.
