Considered one of the most important figures of the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance of the mid-1950s, Philip Whalen was an American poet who emerged from the Beat movement. He became an ordained Zen Buddhist priest in 1973, and published many praised works of poetry, as well as two novels: "You Didn't Even Try" and "Imaginary Speeches for a Brazen Head"
