Although haiku poetry in pre-modern times was mainly a man’s art, some female poets who exceeded in this discipline managed to establish themselves as professional writers. Ome Shushiki was one of those poets.
Shushiki was a student of Takarai Kikaku (a disciple of Matsuo Basho) and made her name as a haiku poet from a very young age.
