Silence arrives

as mountains

wrapped in rain

This week we present a haiku poem written by Kashyapi, a Zen woman who spent many years living as a lay forest monk, in deep retreat from the world; her poems are about silence, the research of inner peace, and human relationship with nature. Kashyapi’s works show that a journey of self-discovery can be described with just a few words at a time: and the result can be beautiful and intimate poetry.

naviarhaiku115 – You know where you are?

um the boy studied the map

well what's the next stop

I was intrigued by the similarities between this poem by Visceral/Realism and the one we posted last week. Both haiku are about travelers and exploration, but while Phocasm’s poem highlights how borders and differences become unimportant when we see things from a different angle, Visceral/Realism’s haiku seems to be more focused on the importance of the journey itself: “It is the journey that matters, in the end” someone once said. Curiosity is what leads us to explore what we don’t know, and by exploring we learn more about other cultures and ourselves.

Although haiku poetry in pre-modern times was mainly a man’s art, some female poets who exceeded in this discipline managed to establish themselves as professional writers. Ome Shushiki was one of those poets.
Shushiki was a student of Takarai Kikaku (a disciple of Matsuo Basho) and made her name as a haiku poet from a very young age.

The cool breeze

fills the emptiness of heaven

with the voice of pine trees

“Which is it makes the sound, the pine-tree or the breeze? Is empty space warm or cool? The region of the poem is not different from that of these questions, the answer to them, - not the logical or purely intellectual answer, but the answer that willy-nilly we have to accept. If you arein the state of mind to accept the answer willingly, life accomplishes its ultimate and only object, to be lived.”

This is what R.H. Blyth wrote about this week’s poem in his book “Haiku Volume 3 Summer-Autumn”.

A contemporary of Basho, Ueshima Onitsura was another poet of samurai birth who formulated his own style of writing. Although eclipsed by the most popular Basho, Onitsura has recently been rediscovered and is now generally considered as an important and innovative figure in haiku literature. Thanks to these two poets, the hokku (the opening stanza of Renga, a collaborative linked poem) began to appear as an independent poem, and so starting the tradition of haiku poetry as we know it today.
