naviarhaiku340 – All across the sky

All across the sky
A star has burned itself out
Above the cold sea

I accidentally came across this haiku while doing some research on Ryokan (1758-1831), one of the most important Japanese poets of the Edo period. The author of this poem is Jirozaemon Yasuo, mostly known by his pen name Inan. Inan was headman of the village where Ryokan was born (before being replaced by Ryokan’s father) and a distant disciple of Basho.
